SALZBURG
Salzburg is the capital of the state of Salzburg, in Western Austria. It began as a Celtic settlement and later became the site of a Roman trading centre. In 739, it was made a bishopric by St. Boniface and was raised to an archbishopric in 798. In 1814, Salzburg was incorporated into Austria.
Located on the river Salzach, the city is dominated by the 11th century Hohensalzburg fortress. Industries include stock rearing, dairy farming, forestry, textiles, the production of beer, and the manufacturing of metals, chemicals, and tourism.
Places to visit include; Hohensaltzburg fortress, Mirabell Garden and Castle, Mozart's House and the Cathedral. A music centre for centuries, it is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; the internationally famous annual Salzburg Music Festival has been held here since 1920.
Hotels are plentiful and of a high standard, cheaper accommodation can be found, however it is advisable to arrange accommodation well in advance if one intends visiting during the festival.
There are many things to do and see in Salzburg; notable buildings include Renaissance and Baroque houses, archiepiscopal palaces, and a 17th-century cathedral in the Italian Renaissance style. It is also the seat of Salzburg University and the University of Music and Dramatic Art in Salzburg.
