Sarajevo is a name that invokes grit and determination. The capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo survived to prosperity from one of the worst stances of civil war in world history. It is also the largest city of Bosnia and from socio-economic perspective as well it is considered to be the most important city in the Balkans.
Sarajevo may not feature among the top tourist destinations of the world but the city has enough surprises in its store to amuse visitors. Sarajevo has a long and rich history starting from the Stone Age to the year 1461 when it was founded by the Ottomans. The diverse architectural splendours of different dynasties are evident in Sarajevo streets and various accommodations of the citizens. Monuments from the Ottoman and Austrian-Hungarian eras stand together with buildings from the 20th century. Here also exists the notable Neoclassical and Neomoorish architecture amidst the Modern settings. Many of these are now transformed into hotels to welcome in tourists from all over the globe.
Located close to the center point of the triangular-shaped state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo covers 88.02 sq mile area and population strength of around 290,000. It has a continental climate and experiences warm summers with cold winters, when snow is guaranteed due to the city's altitude. The people of Sarajevo, popularly known as “Sarayliyas” are a patriotic race. But they are very open to modern outlook too which is reflected from their lifestyle and accommodations. Occasionally they lent out there homes and apartments under the ‘house on rent’ policy to cash in on the tourism boom of the city.
An eventful 600 years old past, background of winter Olympics, curves of river Miljacka and the ethereal view of Dinaric Alps mountain range has helped to grow Sarajevo as a tourist spot. Umpteen numbers of travel agencies have mushroomed in the city to chalk out the travel plans for the visitors. Sarajevo overall has some 50 major hotels but it also provides reasonable options like hostels and bed and breakfasts too to suit travellers with different budget range.
