SOFIA
Bulgaria's largest city, Sofia has been its capital since 1878 when it was freed from Turkish rule by the Russians. It lies on an elevated plain at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains and is Bulgaria's cultural and transportation centre as well as the site of many industries, including
textiles, rubber, machinery, electrical equipment, processed food, clothing, footwear, and printing.
Sofia is the site of the University of Sofia, the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Medicine, the State Conservatory, the National Library, the National Art Gallery as well as many museums and monuments. Its historical monuments include the 6th-century church of St. Sofia, the 4th-century Church of Saint George, the oldest structure in the city, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the 15th-century Buyuk Dzhamiya Mosque.
Not surprisingly, with so much to see in the city, tourism is also important for the city's economy. For the tourist and business traveller, Sofia has many luxurious hotel apartments, furnished flats, low priced studios, one and two-bedroom apartments for both short and long-term stay, comfortably located in the city centre.
