ZAGREB

The capital of Croatia, Zagreb was once a Roman settlement. In the 19th century, the city expanded onto the Sava River floodplain, and became the centre of the Croatian independence movement.
Situated on the Sava River in northern Croatia, it is Croatia's principal industrial city producing chemicals, machinery, leather goods, paper, metals, textiles, linen, carpets, paper, and electrical goods.

The Croatian people are friendly and their hotels have a Croatian ambience. Some of the best hotels in Zagreb can be found in convenient locations, a few minutes walk from the museums and art galleries. For longer-term accommodation, it is best to look for a flat before the university term begins. Newspaper advertisements are a good place to find private apartments. There are also agencies with English-speaking staff.
Although it was damaged during the civil war following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991, Zagreb is a beautiful city and a cultural centre as well. There is a university, an opera house, music, art, and film academies, museums, and art galleries and the Academy of Sciences and Arts. There is also an 18th-century palace and remnants of an 11th-century cathedral.
