COPENHAGEN
The name Copenhagen as per English dictionaries originates from the German name “Kopenhagen”. But the Danish name for it, pronounced nowadays, is an altered form of the actual name of the city, which is "Kobmandshavn” meaning “Commercial Harbour” in Danish. Situated on the east side of Sjælland and the Amager Island, this beautiful city is beside the resund strait, which separates Denmark from Sweden.
Around 1000 A.D., Sweyn I Forkbeard (Svend Tveskæg) and his son Canute the Great (Knud den Store) established the Danish capital. But only during the medieval ages Copenhagen happened to gather much reputation. After Bishop Absalon secured it in 1167 A.D., it started growing in stature. The key to this was the magnificent harbour, which catapulted Copenhagen's development till it became a significant hub of commerce. The modern houses and apartment for rent, abundant within the city, still stands upright bearing the traces of the architecture of the medieval times inflicting a sense of nostalgic amongst the far-flown hearts. |
