RIGA

Freedom Monument

Riga, the vibrant capital of Latvia, is the largest city in the country as well as amongst the Baltic States. Situated on the meeting point of Baltic Sea and the River Daugava, Riga is the cultural and commercial hub of the Baltic region. It is one of Eastern Europe's most exciting places that remained hidden away from the world's view for over half a century during the Soviet occupation.
Today, Riga is a dynamic city with exciting possibilities. It is also an important transport junction due to its crossroads location between Western Europe and huge Eastern markets. Riga is home to numerous academic institutions too and eventually, the city hostels are always buzzing with students. The most exciting aspect in Riga is the co-existence of untouched nature and the historic buildings with modern splendours. The city is aesthetically divided into two parts, namely, Old Riga and New Riga. The Old Riga houses all those churches, monuments and historical places adorned with ornamental architectures and sculptures. It is known for some of the best Art Nouveau architecture in Europe. The famous Riga Castle was originally built in 1330 for the Livonian Order of Knights and now it is the official home of the President of Latvia. The best art galleries, restaurants and hotel buildings in this part of the city all together are enough to give an unforgettable experience to the travellers.
To immerse into the old world charm and enjoy the ‘leftover’ royal luxury, tourists can opt to take one of the old manors or house on rent during their stay at Riga. Or else if the solitude of quiet beaches attracts you most, numerous accommodations by the Riga ‘Jurmala’ or sea front is available with breathtaking views. The New Riga skyline is splattered with big supermarkets and high apartment houses with all modern day facilities. Almost all important financial institutions are located here, including the Bank of Latvia. Tourism is also developing fast in Riga with numerous hotels and bed and breakfasts mushrooming in every nook and corner of the city.
