VILNIUS

Church of St. Anne

Vilnius is perhaps the most "underrated" capital city in Eastern Europe. The mystery behind such a distinction lies in its low profile demeanour which quietly nurtures the regales of past in its every nook and corner. It is the capital of Lithuania and literarily the central area of European continent. The fact is established by a survey conducted by the National Geographical Institute of France in 1989 that revealed that the geographical centre point of Europe is just 24 km northwest of Vilnius city. It is one of the country's oldest cities and stretches along the banks of the Vilnia and Neris River.
The famous Baroque Old Town of Vilnius is spread over a vast area and often referred to as the 'New Prague'. In the early fourteenth century, a mention of Vilnius is found in a letter of the Lithuanian ruler, Gediminas as a royal town. Surviving the tragedies of wars, occupations and destruction, the city emerged victorious while preserving its wonderful architecture amidst a beautiful natural setting. In tandem with the typical cosmopolitan features, Vilnius is home to different cultures and religions and invites so from all parts of the world. These pleasant factors have contributed to develop the tourism industry in Vilnius and hotels and all sorts of accommodations have sprung up here and there. The World Heritage site of Vilnius is easily accessible from the numerous hostels and hotels, courtesy to the efficient transport system.
This Baltic city is splattered with beautiful new buildings with late Gothic style from the Renaissance era. While walking down one of those winding stony alleys, tourists will find a good accommodation option as many of the century old houses are now transformed as reasonable bed and breakfast. Amidst the multicultural setup of this largest Baroque city at the north of the Alps, what touch you most are the musical notes flowing out of the opera houses. The economic prosperity of Vilnius reflects in its grand operas and the grandeur of the Jazz festivals. Grab any of the 'apartment for rent' offers near the venues and enjoy the thrilling nightlife of Vilnius.
