CHISINAU

Chisinau is the capital of Moldova, one of the smallest and densely populated countries of Europe. The city is located in the south-central part of the country and northwest of Odessa, Ukraine. No matter how small geographically or economically the city is, Chisinau, formerly Kishiniev, has managed to earn a distinct identity in the European map. The city depicts sheer will of its people to remain an independent nation. Situated by the tributary of river Nistru, Chisinau boasts of a healthy ecological balance, thus acquiring the reputation of the ‘greenest’ city in Europe. The serene tree-lined streets are the best view one can enjoy from the windows of the city hotels.
Founded in 1436, Chisinau was known as a monastery town with innumerable religious structures. It played an important part in the war between Russia and Turkey (1877–78), as the chief centre of the Russian invasion. Today it is the largest city in Moldova and hub of commercial and cultural activities. The city is home to around thirty six universities and is buzzing with students from all over the world. To support this educational environment, the humble citizens often let their house on rent or open the doors of their apartment rooms.
Apart from this, Chisinau is also a major industrial and services centre. After freeing itself from the clutches of the Soviet rule in 1991, the city is now fast developing as a hot tourist destination. The transportation system and accommodation facilities of Chisinau match the international standards. This beautiful city is warm enough to welcome in globetrotters of different financial background. Alongside the luxurious hotel rooms, tourists can opt for the reasonable bed and breakfasts to enjoy the vacations. They are the perfect abode from where one can easily roam about in to the century old architectural wonders. Still, hostels remain the most popular form of accommodation in this educational city.
