BELGRADE

Belgrade, on the outfall of the Sava River to the Danube River in north central Serbia is the capital of Serbia and Monte Negro since 2003 and 1404 respectively, apart from being the capital of Yugoslavia earlier from 1918 until 2003. Once ruled by King Dragutin (1276–1282), the city was given to him as a present by the then King of Hungary. Belgrade is also the oldest city in Europe and had been house to the Vinča culture about 8,000 years ago. The 3rd century BC was when it was home to the Celts before becoming the Roman settlement of Singidunum under the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire. The name Beligrad was assigned in the 8th century AD by the Bulgars, and was often mentioned as the region of "Belgrade and Branichevo". During this time, the city was subjected to a period of Byzantine rivalry and rule, before emerging finally as the stronghold of the medieval Serbian kingdom.

Since 2001, Belgrade has been noticed becoming a choice weekend spot; Belgrade has numerous sites and activities making it a pleasure-dome for visitors. The city offers the Skadarlija, the national museum and adjacent national theatre, Zemun, Nikola Pašić Square and Knez Mihajlova as its prime attractions, though The Federal Parliament and the Old Palace buildings attracts more crowd than the parks, monuments, cafes, restaurants and shopping malls on both sides of the river Sava. An aerial view of the city can be obtained from the top of the Avala monument. Belgrade is not going to turn down the urban predator either, with its extensive range of clubs and discotheques one can ramble on until dawn. A special mention should be made about the rafts on the Rivers Sava and Danube, the most prominent features of Belgrade’s nightlife. The rafts consist of restaurants and discotheques on water.

Clubs like the Andergound, Club 54, BlayWatch and Cabaret Rose are found in ample numbers within the city, though they do not provide an accommodation; for that, one has to choose between the hotel-range and the other economic forms of accommodation. The hotel industry of Belgrade is bound to impress even the most stiff-lipped person, however, the range of youth-hostel, apartment-for-rent and bed-and-breakfast guarantees the most comfortable stay in the “Town-of-the-East”.
