OSAKA

Osaka gifts you with the pleasure of one of the greatest man-made wonders in the world, the Kansai International Airport. The airport is based on a rectangular artificial island off the Osaka Bay and is linked by a bus and train service into the centre of the city and major suburbs. Covering an area of approximately 1,890 square kilometres, Osaka provides accommodations to approximately 8.8 million people, thus becoming the second most populated city of Japan after Tokyo. Famous for its historical and cultural attractions, the city is regarded as one of the glittering examples of Japanese urban phenomenon. Situated by the Yodo River, Osaka is one of the 47 Prefectures of Japan and is part of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area.

Osaka was formerly known as Naniwa and was once the centre point of Buddhism in Japan. In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose Osaka as the location for his castle. Today it is a flourishing city that houses several big banners of Japanese business and industries. Administratively, it is divided into 24 wards. A cultural and educational hub, Osaka is known for its puppet theatres and Kabuki plays and Kansai universities. The business and entertainment districts of the city are located around the Kita and Minami areas in northern and southern Osaka respectively. Several hotels and bed and breakfasts have come up in the city to accommodate the flux of leisure and commercial travellers. However, students of Kansai universities and performers of local shows prefer to take apartments for rent that come in good bargains in Osaka. Kaiyukan, an aquarium located in Osaka Bay, containing 35,000 aquatic animals in 14 tanks is the largest aquarium in the world.
