Among them, Bonaire and Curaçao are part of Leeward and the islands of Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten belong to the Leeward archipelago. The difference between these two island groups is more visible from their topography. While the Leeward Islands have a mixed volcanic and coral origin, the ones in Windward group are mostly rugged and dominated by volcanic mountains.

The Netherlands Antilles was officially formed in 1845. Nowadays, it is regarded as an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
