Located in South Asia, Bangladesh is dripped by the waves of Bay of Bengal on the south. Its mainland is drenched by the huge Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and the alluvial soil of this region is highly fertile supporting agriculture. Moreover the marshy lands and mangroves of Sunderbans in the south of the country are the breeding ground of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. For this reason, Bangladesh is also referred to as the ‘Green Delta’.
Bangladesh may be one of the smallest nations on earth but ranks as the most densely populated country. Once part of the historic region of Bengal at the northeast portion of the Indian subcontinent, it emerged as East Pakistan after the end of British rule in 1947. After a bloody freedom battle with support of India, it defeated West Pakistan or Just Pakistan on December 16, 1971 and became independent. Today Bangladesh is member of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, BIMSTEC, OIC and the D-8.
