MUNICH

Come October and the state capital of Bavaria runs wild with the inception of Oktoberfest, an annual 14-day event celebrated by six million plus people to remember the wedding ceremony of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen, who ruled Bavaria from Munich, between 1825 and 1848. But what was Munich like, before?
Munichen was founded in 1158 A.D. by Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and took 50 years to become a ‘city’ with munitions. The Lion was dethroned in 1180 because of his extreme policies and Otto of Wittelsbach was made the Duke of Bavaria. 1255 transformed Munich into the Ducal abode of Upper Bavaria, which was completely demolished by fire in 1327. Re-construction of Munich occurred under the guidance of Ludwig IV. Till 1806, Munich changed hands until it was declared the capital of the new Kingdom of Bavaria. The State Parliament (the Landtag) was also set up shortly, along with the new Arch-Diocese of Munich and Freising.
